Amazon Ring Partnerships Explained

What’s happening

  • Amazon’s Ring (maker of video doorbells and home cameras) has formed new partnerships with Flock Safety and Axon.

  • Axon builds tasers, police body cams, and runs the Axon Evidence database used by many law enforcement agencies.

  • Flock Safety operates license plate reader networks for police and neighborhoods.

Together, these deals link Ring’s private home camera network with law enforcement data systems, allowing easier requests for footage in investigations.

The new feature: “Community Request”

  • Police submit requests for specific time/location footage through their Flock or Axon accounts.

  • Ring forwards that request to relevant homeowners through the Neighbors app.

  • Users can choose whether or not to share the clip; if shared, it’s sent anonymously through secure Axon/Flock systems.

  • Participation is voluntary, and police don’t know who declines.

  • Once uploaded, the footage can’t be deleted or retracted.

Claimed benefits

  • Faster investigations: police skip door-to-door canvassing.

  • Verified evidence trail: footage moves directly into secure Axon databases for use in court.

  • User control: owners opt in or out digitally.

Privacy concerns

  • Expansion of surveillance: merging private Ring feeds with public law enforcement databases could normalize constant monitoring.

  • Federal access: Flock has reportedly allowed data sharing with agencies like ICE and the Secret Service.

  • Social pressure: notifications may pressure users to share footage, even if optional.

  • Permanent upload: shared clips cannot be removed once in Axon systems.

How to opt out

  1. Unlink accounts:

    • Ring app → Menu → Control Center → Amazon Account Linking → Unlink.

  2. Disable Community Requests:

    • Ring app → Device Settings → Turn off Community Request notifications.

  3. Optional: Turn off Emergency Requests and Amazon Sidewalk for added privacy

Bottom line

This integration gives users a choice:

  • Opt in to help community safety via faster investigations.

  • Opt out to maintain maximum privacy and prevent footage from entering larger surveillance networks.
